At dhoop we use food as a lens. Through this lens, we interrogate culture, sustainability, design, and the systems that sustain life. We started as a magazine focused on stories of food and its intersections. Over time, we have grown into something more expansive—a space and a research platform that embraces the multidisciplinary nature of food and invites collaboration and deeper enquiry.

question (1/4)
why does the world need another food magazine?
why does the world need another food magazine?
The world needs enough spaces to share their unique versions of looking at food – this ranges from cooking, rituals, traditions, heritage, culture to technology, design, futures and much more. More diverse platforms facilitate more diverse discourse. And with dhoop, the intention is to become a space where we can critically talk about food systems and learn/unlearn how we look at food.

why a physical magazine over a digital publication/video content?
why a physical magazine over a digital publication/video content?
Editing and producing a physical magazine challenges what we understand as content – it compels us to think critically about the topic – through writing yes, but also through design. As one flips the pages of the magazine, one is on a journey that cannot be replicated online through a digital publication or a short-form video (of course, this is not always true).

how do you sustain a physical magazine in 2026?
how do you sustain a physical magazine in 2026?
We stock at multiple bookstores across India and the US, which helps us cover a part of our printing costs. Unfortunately, all other costs are borne by us.In the coming years, we hope to find more like-minded people to work with through collaborations and editorials — think issues with chefs, artists, or researchers who share our food-systems lens.
We also want the magazine to be on the shelves of more homes and in the hands of more readers!

Issue 03: Cooking
This issue expands our understanding of cooking—as a practice, sure, but perhaps more importantly, as an understanding, as a language, as a memory, and in transit.
